When someone brings home an axolotl from Axolotl Superstore, they are trusting us with a living animal. We take that responsibility seriously. Our breeding and animal care standards should be clear to every customer.
Our commitment to the animals we sell
We do not knowingly offer an axolotl with an identified serious inherited health problem. If an animal shows a concerning developmental or health issue, it should not be represented as a healthy animal ready for a new home. We put the animal's welfare ahead of making a sale, and we want customers to tell us promptly if a concern arises after purchase so we can investigate and help.
Responsible breeding also means considering what is known about parentage, development, and health when making breeding decisions. Our Healthy Trade Institute certification article explains our broader approach to animal care and biosecurity. We welcome specific information about a line, including records of affected relatives or an identified genetic variant. We take documented health concerns seriously and use them to guide our decisions.
What a breeder can and cannot guarantee about genetics
An axolotl may look and behave normally while carrying a recessive variant. A visible color or pattern is also not, by itself, proof that an animal has a harmful inherited condition. Those are different questions. Our axolotl morph and color guide explains the appearances customers commonly see. Research on captive axolotl populations shows why genetic diversity and careful breeding decisions matter, but appearance alone cannot reveal every variant an animal might carry. Research on captive axolotl genetics and genetic variation under domestication offer more background.
That is why we will not make the impossible promise that any breeder can prove every axolotl is free of every unknown or recessive risk. Our promise is to be honest about what is known, take evidence of harmful traits seriously, and never knowingly send an animal with an identified serious inherited problem as a healthy pet.
