Setting up your first axolotl aquarium is one of the most important parts of bringing an axolotl home. The goal is a fully cycled, cool, low-flow aquarium that is easy to test and maintain.
How Big Does an Axolotl Tank Need to Be?
For one axolotl, a properly maintained 10-gallon aquarium can be used for the animal's entire life. The key is consistent maintenance: test the water, remove waste promptly, complete regular water changes, and keep filtration effective without creating strong current.
Larger aquariums can provide extra water volume and more room for décor, but they are not required for a single axolotl under Axolotl Superstore's care standard.

Keep Water Between 65–70°F
Axolotls are cold-water amphibians. Keep the aquarium in the 65–70°F target range. 72°F is the danger threshold; begin cooling promptly if the water reaches 72°F.
Keep the aquarium away from direct sunlight, heating vents, and other heat sources. Depending on the room, an aquarium fan, air conditioning, or a properly sized chiller may be useful.
Cycle the Tank Before Your Axolotl Arrives
Never place an axolotl into a newly filled, uncycled aquarium. The nitrogen cycle establishes beneficial bacteria that process waste.
Before adding the animal, confirm:
- Ammonia: 0 ppm
- Nitrite: 0 ppm
- Nitrate: present but controlled, preferably below 20 ppm
- Temperature: 65–70°F
- Chlorine/chloramine: 0 ppm
Use Gentle Filtration
Axolotls produce noticeable waste but do not appreciate strong current. Sponge filters and other low-flow filtration options work well when sized and maintained appropriately.
Choose Safe Substrate and Décor
A bare bottom or fine aquarium sand can work well. Avoid gravel and small stones that could be swallowed. Provide at least one smooth hide and avoid décor with sharp edges or openings that could trap the animal.
Use Live Plants When Appropriate

Maintain the Aquarium Consistently
Check temperature and behavior every day. Remove visible waste and uneaten food promptly. Test ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH regularly and complete water changes as needed to keep the tank stable.
