Before bringing an axolotl home, make sure the aquarium is fully cycled, cool, and ready to maintain stable water quality. This checklist covers the equipment and preparation steps most new owners need.
Axolotl tank setup checklist
- Appropriately sized aquarium with good floor space
- Gentle biological filtration
- Reliable aquarium thermometer
- Liquid water test kit for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH
- Water conditioner that treats chlorine and chloramine
- At least one smooth hide
- Safe substrate or bare bottom
- Appropriate food
- Plan for keeping the water cool
- Bucket, siphon, or other water-change equipment
1. Cycle the aquarium before the axolotl arrives
The nitrogen cycle establishes beneficial bacteria that process ammonia into nitrite and then nitrate. Do not add an axolotl until ammonia and nitrite are 0 ppm and the tank can consistently process waste.
2. Choose gentle filtration
Axolotls produce a noticeable amount of waste but can be stressed by strong current. Sponge filters, baffled hang-on-back filters, and properly adjusted canister filters can work when flow is gentle.
3. Keep the water cool
Axolotls are cold-water amphibians. Read our axolotl water temperature guide for target ranges and cooling options.
4. Test the water
Keep ammonia and nitrite at 0 ppm, control nitrate with maintenance and water changes, and use dechlorinator whenever tap water is added.
5. Add a hide and safe décor
Provide a smooth hide so the axolotl can retreat from light. Avoid sharp décor and openings that could trap the animal.
6. Choose food before pickup or delivery
Have suitable food ready before the animal arrives. Common choices include earthworms or nightcrawlers, live blackworms, and quality sinking pellets. See our axolotl feeding guide.
7. Build a maintenance routine
Plan for regular testing, partial water changes, waste removal, filter maintenance, and daily temperature checks.
