Unlike wild type axolotls, Black Melanoids lack the shiny iridophore pigmentation that creates metallic or reflective speckling, giving them a darker, more uniform appearance. Their coloration can range from smoky gray to nearly solid black, with natural variations in shade, markings, and gill appearance making each axolotl unique.
