Amazon Sword (Echinodorus grisebachii)

Amazon Sword (Echinodorus grisebachii): Broad-leaf Echinodorus grisebachii adds rooted structure to freshwater planted tanks.

Echinodorus grisebachii, widely recognized as the Amazon Sword, is a classic aquatic plant celebrated for its striking, broad green leaves that form a beautiful underwater canopy. Its vibrant foliage brings a touch of bold, natural elegance to freshwater aquariums of all sizes, instantly creating a lush and peaceful aquatic retreat.

This robust rosette plant offers a commanding structural presence, providing an eye-catching contrast to finer-leaved varieties while adding rich visual scale and depth to your aquascape. As a hearty root feeder, it will thrive comfortably under low to medium lighting when set in a nutrient-dense substrate. CO2 is not strictly required, though supplementing with CO2 injection and root fertilizer will yield significantly denser and more rapid growth.

Before adding to your aquarium

Remove the shipping packaging and any pot, planting wool, or weights as appropriate. Rinse and inspect the plant, and quarantine new plants separately before introduction. Choose planting depth and substrate for the species. Keep rooted crowns and bulbs from being buried too deeply, and remove damaged leaves during establishment.

For an axolotl setup, maintain the animal’s cool-water conditions and gentle lighting. Growth may be slower. Choose planting materials appropriate for an amphibian aquarium. The general plant-growing suggestions above are not treatment instructions for axolotl tanks; avoid adding plant fertilizers or injected CO₂ to an axolotl setup without appropriate specialist guidance.
